Medium: Ceramics
Mona Lisa Ali is a Jordanian-American artist working in CGI, sculpture, and ceramics. Using labor-intensive, handmade processes, her practice explores cultural transmission, place, and resting points. She navigates voids in personal, collective, and national belonging, inherited memory, and the displacement of transmissions through the space between presence, erasure, and reshaping. Her focus on ceramics began during a communal artist walk across Jordan. Using exclusively hand-pinching techniques, she incorporates locally foraged stones crushed into the clay, plant ashes to create glaze, and local clay slips to create irreproducible pieces shaped by flame through wood or soda firing. Ali has participated in several residencies, including YYZ (Toronto), Spring Sessions (Jordan, twice), the Caetani Cultural Centre (Vernon, BC), and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park (Japan), where her ceramics practice greatly expanded.
