Mark Tigges is a self taught potter who has spent the last thirty years making thrown vessels and exploring different firing methods. Mark quickly developed an interest in ash glazes and explored porcelain at cone 6 in oxidation at his first studio in North Vancouver. After taking part in a wood firing at the Shadbolt Centre and falling in love with the surfaces attained, he resolved to build his own kiln. In September 2011 he purchased a rural property in Maple Ridge and a year later began construction of his kiln. Inspired by the heavy ash deposits of traditional Japanese Anagama kilns, he built a contemporary interpretation thereof.
