Gone Hooking Traditional Rug Hooking Group
Medium: Wool
We are Traditional Rug Hookers from Lower Mainland and Area. We’ve met weekly since 2004, when Freda Jackson who had lived in Nova Scotia, moved back to Maple Ridge and instructed a few friends in the art of Traditional Rug Hooking, our group grew from there. The basic technique is to hold a thin strip of wool on the backside of a piece of woven fabric, like burlap, linen, or monk’s cloth, drawing small loops of the strip through an opening of the weave using a hand-held hooking tool. Even loops are the make of a rug hooker’s skill, it’s a very simple task. A pattern is drawn on your backing before starting. You can use new or recycled wool or yarn. Most of us use wool, as it’s extremely hard-wearing and resists dirt. This art was introduced to the East Coast of Canada by immigrants coming to North America.
